Moving Tips
We have collected a variety of moving tips to make your move as easy and smooth as possible.
Make a list of what you need to do, and when you need to do it.
Schedule a moving company and/or rental truck. Check the limits of insurance they offer.
Arrange for packing materials and assistance for moving furniture and appliances.
Notify post office of the change of address at least two weeks prior to moving. You can extend the mail forwarding service for six months. Mail postcards to friends & creditors.
Notify the Ministry of Transportation for driver's license, and vehicle permit.
Cancel old insurance and arrange for your new insurance.
Arrange for new doctors and dentists and contact your family doctor and all other specialists to get copies of your medical records. Your new physician and other specialists will need your history.
For those with animals, you will need their medical records too.
Update or open new bank accounts and arrange to transfer the funds and contents of your safety deposit box to a new bank or branch near your new home.
Contact utility companies at least two weeks prior to your move. If possible, have utility service connected in new home one day before you move in, and service turned off at your old address the day after you move.
Arrange for transfer of information with clubs, churches and other organizations and notify all delivery services.
Contact schools and arrange for transfer of student records.
All your valuables should be carried personally or special arrangements made for their transport. It is a good idea to organize all important documents in a fire-safe box.
Pack a bag or box of items you will need during your move such as: medications, money, telephone, checkbook, keys, map, food, snacks, drinks, toilet paper, towels, soap, pen, eyeglasses, pet supplies, utility knife, children's games and other items you may need. Keep these items separated from those that are to be loaded onto the moving truck.
Pack suitcases for the trip to your new home and put in extra clothes for emergencies.
Make sure everything is packed carefully. Mark cartons on top and on the side for easy identification.
Make a list of all necessary phone numbers and put them by telephone.
Pick up all personal items at local businesses (dry cleaning, film, storage).
Let a close friend or family member know your travel route and schedule.
Defrost the refrigerator and freezer so they can dry at least 24 hours.
Read all utility meters (gas, water, hydro).
Check the attic, basement, garage, laundry room, inside closets and cabinets for forgotten items and leave keys with appropriate person.
Review your checklist to make sure everything has been done.
